When you think about growing revenue, it’s tempting to just focus on attracting more traffic. More ads. More SEO. More social media. But one of the biggest growth opportunities is much closer to the finish line: your checkout.

The difference between a customer completing a purchase and abandoning their cart often comes down to removing small moments of friction. A checkout that feels unfamiliar, offers limited payment choice or makes rewards difficult to understand can steadily erode conversion and customer retention.

Here are three common checkout mistakes we often see, and what you can do instead.

1. Limiting payment choice

No two customers prefer to pay the same way.

Some are happy using cards, while others increasingly expect to pay directly from their bank account with PayID or PayTo, or with a digital wallet they’ve used hundreds of times before.

When checkout only offers a single payment option, customers who don’t have that method readily available may delay the purchase or abandon it altogether. Every additional barrier at checkout creates another opportunity for someone to reconsider.

Offering multiple payment methods allows shoppers to use whichever option is fastest and most convenient for them. As real-time payment networks continue to expand globally, bank payments are becoming an increasingly important part of that mix.

✅ Tip: Review your checkout regularly to make sure your payment options match what your customers actually want to use.

2. Treating every market the same

Expanding internationally means more than swapping languages on a page. Customers expect to see payment methods they already know and trust. What feels familiar in Australia may be completely different in Japan, the United States or Southeast Asia.

A customer who reaches checkout only to discover none of their preferred local payment methods are available may hesitate to complete the purchase, even after they’ve already decided to buy.

The best international checkouts feel local. They surface the relevant currencies and payment methods automatically, so the experience feels familiar from start to finish.

✅ Tip: If you sell internationally, aim for a checkout that feels local to each market, with familiar currencies and payment methods front and centre.

3. Making loyalty feel like work

Customers love being rewarded, but very few enjoy keeping track of points balances, waiting months to earn enough rewards or navigating complicated redemption rules.

Traditional loyalty programs often create a disconnect between the purchase and the reward. By the time customers can actually use their points, the excitement from the original purchase has disappeared. That’s one reason many retailers are shifting towards simpler, more immediate reward experiences.

Cashback, instant credits and similar real-time rewards create a much stronger connection between the purchase and the benefit. The easier it is for customers to understand the value they’re receiving, the more likely they are to engage with it.

✅ Tip: Keep your loyalty program simple enough that customers understand its value without needing an explanation.

The bigger picture

Great checkouts remove friction. Processing payments is just the baseline.

That means giving customers payment options they actually want, building experiences that feel local wherever they shop, and keeping rewards simple enough to understand at a glance.

Small improvements at the final step of the purchase journey can have a huge impact on conversion and repeat purchases.

How Hello Clever approaches these challenges

At Hello Clever, we’ve built our platform around solving these three areas of checkout friction.

Payment Gateway 3 gives you a single, unified checkout that supports real-time bank payments like PayID, cards, digital wallets and other local payment methods side by side, so customers can pay however suits them without you managing separate integrations for each method. For merchants selling across borders, that same checkout automatically surfaces the currencies and payment methods relevant to each market, so international customers see a checkout that feels local.

On the loyalty side, Hello Clever replaces complicated points programs with instant cashback that lands the moment a customer pays, so the reward is felt straight away instead of buried in a rules page.

The result is a checkout built to complete today’s sale and set up tomorrow’s as well.
